Siebel: No time for Apologies

Earlier this year, fortune's winds began to shift for Tom Siebel. The founder and chief executive of the enormously successful Siebel Systems saw his software company's revenue drop in the first quarter. With German rival SAP closing in on the No. 2 position in the market, Microsoft also announced plans to introduce competing software by year's end. Studies from market researchers suggested a high rate of customer dissatisfaction with customer relationship management software, a segment in which Gartner and Merrill Lynch rate Siebel as the largest player.

Siebel said Lawrie was his company's first choice. "We're very, very pleased that our first choice for the job ultimately accepted," he said in a conference call announcing the changes. "We cannot imagine a more experienced or talented executive to assume the role."

CEO Visions: Business Process Is the Focal Point
Source: Information Week
Future historians may well look back on 2003 as a major inflection point in the evolution of information technology--as important, perhaps, as the commercialization of the Internet in the mid-1990s. Last year, we saw the beginning of a paradigm shift toward business-process computing, a new approach to IT made possible by the emergence of Web services. In 2003 and beyond, this shift will accelerate to become the next wave in enterprise IT, resulting in dramatic gains in productivity and organizational agility.

In an industry not known for promoting the shy, quiet types, Tom Siebel stands out. His arrogance and self-assurance have made him the No. 1 software executive people love to hate. His partners live in fear and loathing, his competitors become apoplectic at the mention of his name, and analysts and the press are unanimous in their frustration at the company's closed-door, no-access-is-good policy. Ironically, the only people who seem to love Siebel are his customers -- of course, you have to take Tom's word on that.

This Time Tom Siebel Guessed Wrong

Tom Siebel, it turns out, cannot see around corners after all. It's a Wednesday in mid-July, and the cocky, combative, loquacious CEO of software provider Siebel Systems is hosting his company's second- quarter conference call with financial analysts. Normally such an occasion would be a forum for Siebel to brag that his company's software is telling him all he needs to know about everything from customer behavior to the state of the global economy. Yet on this day Siebel is morose because the numbers are so utterly and indisputably bleak.

Tom Siebel: We'll Embrace .Net

While other customer relationship management (CRM) enterprise vendors are publicly denouncing Microsoft's .Net as an enterprise platform and have no plans to develop CRM products to support the architecture, Siebel Systems is playing it safe. SAP, Oracle and PeopleSoft have all said they do not believe .Net will be a big enterprise play and as a result they will not support the platform. However, Siebel Chairman and Chief Executive Tom Siebel said this line of thinking does not make sense to him and Siebel will support both J2EE and .Net in future CRM releases.
